The Guadalquivir River Flows

The Guadalquivir River flows
through olives and lemons.
The two rivers of Granada
descend from snow into wheat.

Ah, love
that is gone forever!

The Guadalquivir River
has pomegranate-bearded banks.
Of the two rivers of Granada—
one weeps, the other bleeds.

Ah, love
that flew far away!

For the ships with linen sails,
our Seville has a path.
Through the waters of Granada,
only sighs do the rowing.

Ah, love
that is gone forever!

Guadalquivir, a towering pile,
and wind among the oranges.
The Darro and the Genil—small towers
dead above the nearby pools.

Ah, love
that flew far away!

Who tells me that water holds
the fire of screams—who says so?

Ah, love
that is gone forever!

Send your olives, Andalusia,
to your sea—and your oranges too.

Ah, love
that flew far away!
