History & Architecture
Early Origins: The first written record of Chillon Castle dates back to 1150, though the site may have been fortified earlier. Originally built by the Counts of Savoy, the castle served as a strategic stronghold controlling the passage between northern and southern Europe. Its location on a rocky island provided natural protection and a vantage point over the Rhône Valley.
Savoyard Period: During the 12th to 16th centuries, Chillon Castle was expanded and renovated under the House of Savoy. Notably, in 1436, Duke Amadeus VIII commissioned the creation of the Coat of Arms Hall ceiling, a masterpiece of late Gothic art .
Bernese and Vaudois Periods: In 1536, the castle was seized by Bernese forces and later became part of the Canton of Vaud following the French Revolution. During this time, it served various functions, including as a munitions depot .
