Poem by Ismail Kadare

IN THE PARK COVERED WITH LEAVES
In the park that leaves have veiled,
We walk together, calm and slow.
Autumn, with its mellow trail,
Has laid a golden rug below.

And perhaps like some faint dream,
A late dusk flickered in its hue—
This park, all covered in a gleam
Of leaves, where time now walks with you.

Don’t fear the drifters with their smoke,
My dear, there’s nothing there to dread.
Not even ancient beasts could choke
Your image from the world ahead.

That you would come, so full of grace,
With hair like this, with steps so light—
The earth first had to tame its face
And turn the glaciers back in flight.

It couldn’t have happened any other way,
No, it couldn’t have been another fate.
The monsters had to pass away
For you to walk into this date…
