Gjirokastra – The City of Stone and History

Gjirokastra is one of the most unique and beautiful cities in Albania, located in the southern part of the country, on a hillside overlooking the Drino Valley. This city is known as “The Stone City” because of its characteristic stone houses and slate rooftops that create a rare and impressive view.

With a history that dates back centuries, Gjirokastra has been part of UNESCO’s World Heritage since 2005. It preserves traditional Ottoman architecture and is home to a magnificent fortress – the Gjirokastra Castle – which dominates the city. The castle offers a panoramic view and holds a historical treasure with its armaments museum and cultural spaces.

Gjirokastra is also the birthplace of the renowned writer Ismail Kadare and the former leader Enver Hoxha. Its steep, narrow cobbled streets, combined with ancient houses featuring large windows and wooden balconies, create a magical atmosphere that takes you back in time.

The city’s culture, polyphonic music, and the hospitality of its people are essential parts of its identity. Gjirokastra is a place where history, tradition, and nature coexist in perfect harmony.
