Poem by Fjodor Tjutçev

I Have Known Those Eyes—Those Eyes!

I have known eyes—those very eyes!
How deeply I loved them—God knows why!
They held such fire and strange delight,
My soul could never say goodbye.

Within that glance, so undefined,
Lay life’s full depth from start to end.
It burned with passion, raw and blind,
With sorrow no one else could send.

They looked with weight, yet so supreme,
Beneath soft lids that moved so slow,
They laughed, they shone, they held a dream—
A suffering too sweet to know.

I often sat, completely dazed,
But never could I bear their gaze
Without my soul left all amazed,
Without my tears to sing their praise.
