Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most iconic and fairytale-like castles in the world. Located in the Bavarian Alps in southern Germany, it was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century as a personal refuge and a tribute to the composer Richard Wagner, whom the king deeply admired.
Construction of the castle began in 1869 but was never fully completed. Despite this, Neuschwanstein stands as a breathtaking architectural masterpiece, blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine styles into a romantic vision of a medieval knight’s castle. Perched dramatically on a hilltop, surrounded by forests and mountains, its white towers and scenic views have inspired countless artists, filmmakers, and dreamers. In fact, it even served as the model for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.
Although Ludwig II lived in the castle for only a short time before his mysterious death, his vision left behind a symbol of beauty, imagination, and isolation. Today, Neuschwanstein Castle is one of Germany’s most visited landmarks, attracting millions of tourists each year who come to admire its magical design and explore its fascinating history.
