What Am I Without You?

At first, there was you,
then you shaped me from the air (just for yourself).
…But when the storm of union sprinkled separation,
you trembled,
and bravely, you stepped into my fear
and hid away.
You hid with the rightful pride of a man,
and our bones intertwined
to become shelter for one another.
You blended into my blood,
became a southern breeze in my flesh and skin,
and in the shadows granted by the stone-born sun,
you placed our times—
time upon time,
cooling, like the pain of farewells.

Then,
you nailed my sighs to the cross of light…
because even you can see
there is yearning between us,
there are unspoken kisses…
but,
stay there, in the fevered veins of a woman.
Surely, I will guard your hiding place
as long as you warm yourself in my fire.
…And beware,
fires do not last forever,
and perhaps you’ll feel the urge
to chase after another flame…

And don’t forget,
for you are air, and I am made of air.
If you are lost or vanish,
then I am lost too,
for you are substance.
What am I without you…?
