It was built in the 15th century by a Moorish architect – common practice back in the medieval times – and is now deemed one of the best examples of Spanish Mudejar brickwork with elements of Gothic architecture.
Interestingly, the bricks used during construction are hardened bricks that can withstand enemy onslaught during sieges.

The central keep is situated in the northern part of the castle and is known as the Tower of Homage.
The castles used to have 2 walls that defended the complex, but the outer wall is ruined today. The castle belonged to the powerful Spanish House of Alba.
