Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois will be sidelined for about two weeks due to a groin injury, reports The Athletic.
The Belgian international played the full match in Madrid’s 5-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday, but the club confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that he had “an injury to the adductor muscle of his left leg.”
Courtois will miss Saturday’s El Clasico against Barcelona in La Liga and is also a doubt for several upcoming matches for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Forward Rodrygo has already been ruled out of El Clasico after suffering an injury in the Dortmund win, but midfielder Brahim Diaz is expected to be included in the squad.
Madrid will face Valencia in the Spanish championship on November 2, followed by a Champions League match against Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu three days later, and a home league match against Osasuna on October 9 before the international break.
The former Chelsea goalkeeper will be replaced in the starting lineup by Andriy Lunin, who played 31 games for Ancelotti’s side last season while Courtois was sidelined due to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
Real Madrid is currently trailing Barcelona, which has three more points at the top of La Liga, and a home win on Saturday would see them level with their rivals at the top of the table.
