Raul Gonzalez, an icon of Real Madrid, has shared his honest opinion about the debate over who is better, Ronaldo or Messi.
The Spaniard is a Real Madrid legend, having scored 323 goals in 741 matches with the white shirt. He is the third-highest scorer in Real Madrid’s history, behind Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo, who is first with 450 goals.
Raul and Ronaldo played together for only one season, the 2009/10 season.
However, for Raul, the best in history is not Ronaldo, but a player from Real Madrid’s rival, Barcelona.
Yes, that’s right, it’s Lionel Messi.
In 2015, Raul told Sports Illustrated: “I was lucky to play with Ronaldo, Zidane, Figo, and Cristiano, but Messi is different.”
“He makes everything look easy. When you watch him play, it looks like he’s playing in the street with friends,” he added.
Messi seems to have surpassed Ronaldo in the debate over who is the best in history, especially since his triumph in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
He also has an edge in Ballon d’Or wins, with eight titles compared to Ronaldo’s five.
The 2024 Ballon d’Or, however, will go to another name, as neither Messi nor Ronaldo are nominated for this award.
Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. is said to be the main favorite for the award, competing against his teammate Jude Bellingham and Manchester City’s Rodri.
