Bled Castle, perched on a 130-meter cliff near Lake Bled in Slovenia, is a historical landmark that celebrated its 1000th anniversary in 2011. The castle offers stunning views of the lake, which features a small island with a 16th-century Catholic chapel, and the majestic Alps in the background, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere, especially at sunrise or sunset.

A local legend speaks of the “Wishing Bell,” commissioned by the widow of the castle’s owner who was killed by bandits. The bell sank during transport, but a new one was later made by the Pope and sent to Bled, known for granting wishes. This bell survived when French occupiers removed all others in the 19th century, and its sound is said to be heard on stormy nights.

Originally built over 1,000 years ago, the castle has survived earthquakes and wars. It was a German military base during World War II and later became state property. After a fire in 1947, it was extensively restored, and a museum was opened to showcase its rich history. Visitors can explore the museum, chapel, ancient printing press, wine cellar, and blacksmith’s workshop, where they can even forge a souvenir coin.
