Ashamed by Atalanta, Van Dijk apologizes to Liverpool fans

Liverpool captain Virgil Van Dijk has apologized to his team’s fans after suffering a heavy defeat at home to Atalanta in the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Atalanta took a significant step towards qualifying for the semi-finals of the Europa League after defeating Liverpool 3-0 in the first leg quarter-final match held at Anfield.

The goals for the Bergamo team were scored by Gianluca Scamacca (38, 60) and Mario Pasalic (83). With this victory, Atalanta ended Liverpool’s streak of 33 unbeaten matches at Anfield, as their last home defeat was in February of last year against Real Madrid (2-5) in the Champions League.

Everything that could go wrong went wrong, and above all, I apologize to the fans. It depends on us to focus on the upcoming matches and try to turn this around,” Van Dijk said after the match.

The second leg quarter-final match of the Europa League in Bergamo will be held next Thursday.
