Arsenal footballer Oleksandr Zinchenko has revealed he would leave the UK to fight in Ukraine if called upon.
The 27-year-old told BBC Newsnight he had donated around £1 million to help people in his country since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. “BBC Newsnight” asked the footballer if he would respond to a call to arms, if he would see more value in that than playing football in the Premier League.
“I think it’s a clear answer. I would go to fight,” Zinchenko initially said, adding that he had former schoolmates fighting on the front line.
“It’s hard to comprehend that we were recently in the same school, playing on the playground or on the football field, and now they have to defend our country. Honestly, it’s so hard to accept this, but it is what it is. We can’t give up,” he said, among other things.
