Vinicius Junior informed Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez in October that he will not sign a new contract with the club as long as he has a difficult relationship with coach Xabi Alonso, reports journalist Mario Cortegana of The Athletic.
Vinicius apologized after reacting angrily to being substituted during the 2-1 win over Barcelona on October 26.
However, Alonso was noticeably absent from his statement, as he apologized only to the fans, teammates, the club, and Pérez for his behavior.
The winger was heard saying, “I’d better leave,” as he left the pitch during his outburst in El Clásico.
He started the next three matches for Real Madrid before being left out of Alonso’s lineup for the 2-2 draw against Elche on Sunday.
Vinicius is under contract with Real Madrid until June 2027.
The player and the club were discussing a new deal in January, but talks were suspended after the two sides failed to reach an agreement.
The 25-year-old now believes he is being treated unfairly by Alonso – who replaced Carlo Ancelotti in May – and this is heavily influencing the Brazilian’s decision not to commit his future to Los Blancos.
There is also a significant gap in wage expectations.
Vinicius currently earns around €18 million per year after taxes, and Real Madrid offered him a raise earlier in 2025 that would increase his salary to around €20 million net per year, according to Cortegana. Vinicius rejected the offer.
The club asked Vinicius’ representatives to propose an agreement.
His camp, possibly encouraged by lucrative Saudi Pro League interest, requested up to €30 million per season including base salary, performance bonuses, and a renewal bonus, according to Cortegana.
Such a deal has never been offered to any Real Madrid player, and the total package would match the biggest contract in the club’s history, which was given to Cristiano Ronaldo.
Vinicius and Real Madrid held further contract talks at the start of the season, but negotiations stalled.
Now, his relationship with Alonso appears to be another obstacle.
Vinicius’ name has appeared regularly in transfer market reports since August 2024, when his representatives reportedly discussed a potential move to the Saudi Pro League that could earn him an annual salary of €350 million.
