The French Football Federation begins steps to appoint Zidane as national team coach

The President of the French Football Federation (FFF), Philippe Diallo, has confirmed that no decision will be made regarding Didier Deschamps’ successor as head coach of the French national team before the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup.

However, French media report that the FFF is already working on a potential scenario involving the appointment of Zinedine Zidane, including discussions about his possible coaching staff.

“We’ll see then,” Diallo said in an interview in November. “Many things can happen that are not what people expect. For the moment, as I have said, I have great admiration and respect for Zinedine Zidane, both for what he has given to French football and for what he has shown as a coach by winning trophies. But one thing at a time. Right now, we will focus on preparing for the World Cup.”

Zidane, who has won major titles as Real Madrid’s head coach and is an icon of French football, is seen as one of the leading candidates to take over the national team after the World Cup, should Deschamps decide to step down.

French fans are expected to closely follow upcoming developments as the 2026 World Cup approaches and the future of France’s bench remains uncertain.
