Real Madrid have closed the gap to just one point behind Barcelona in La Liga since Álvaro Arbeloa took charge, with the former Castilla coach winning all four league matches.
However, assessments of Arbeloa have not been unanimously positive since he assumed the role.
Despite their La Liga form, performances have been mixed, with defeats to Albacete in the Copa del Rey and Benfica in the Champions League coming in between league fixtures.
Both results have raised concerns that Arbeloa may not be able to deliver the level of improvement required at the Bernabéu.
One of the reasons behind the departure of predecessor Xabi Alonso was his relationship with some of Real Madrid’s star players, although the Basque coach also had supporters in the dressing room.
According to Cadena Cope, star forward Kylian Mbappé was happier under Alonso than he currently is under Arbeloa.
It was noted that Mbappé, who spoke to the media a week after Alonso’s dismissal, strongly defended his work, stating that Alonso “had not failed” at Real Madrid and that he would be “a fantastic coach” in the future.
However, it appears that Mbappé is not necessarily in the majority.
Reports in recent weeks suggest that Arbeloa’s arrival has reduced tension at the training ground and improved the overall atmosphere.
In particular, Arbeloa has been quick to defend his players, including Vinícius Júnior.
Nevertheless, Arbeloa still does not seem to have fully convinced the squad that he is a long-term solution, as some of his tactical instructions have not completely inspired the players.
Although changes take time and require adaptation to take effect, this transitional phase now appears to be reflected on the pitch.
