Poem by Rainer Maria Rilke

When your eye first caught me,
I was so small, nothing more,
and I bloomed like a linden branch
within you, entirely voiceless.

From smallness I had no name,
yet it burned inside my heart,
until you told me that I am now
so great for every name to bear:

There I feel that I am one
with mountain, sea, and myth,
and like the fragrance of summer wine
I leave a trace upon your soul…
