Poem by Charles Bukowski:

The house next to me fills me with sadness.
Both spouses wake up early.
They go to work
and return home early in the evening.
They have a son and a little daughter.
At nine o’clock in the evening, the lights of the house go out.

The next morning, both spouses wake up early.
They go to work.
They return early in the evening.
At nine o’clock in the evening, the lights go out.

The house next to me fills me with sadness.
The people inside are good,
I love them.

But it seems to me as if they are sinking.
And I cannot manage to help them.

They are managing to survive.
They are not even homeless.
But the price is terrible.

At some point during the day
I will cast a glance at the house
And the house will also cast a glance at me
And it will burst into tears, yes, it will do that,
I feel it.
