Barcelona president Joan Laporta has expressed his desire to organize a tribute match for Lionel Messi during the inauguration of the newly renovated “Spotify Camp Nou.”
The Argentine star continues to shine for Inter Miami, with whom he recently extended his contract until 2028.
However, Laporta revealed that he wants Barcelona’s return to their legendary stadium to be accompanied by a special tribute to their former captain.
“It would be a beautiful way to inaugurate the new Camp Nou — with a tribute to Messi and a full stadium. I would be delighted to organize a homage match for Lionel Messi,” Laporta said.
The Catalan club is now very close to returning to its historic home, with the match against Alaves at the end of this month expected to be the first played in the renovated stadium.
Today, Barcelona held an open training session attended by around 23,000 fans, as a test ahead of their official return to Camp Nou.
The relationship between Messi and Laporta had been tense since the Argentine’s sudden departure in 2021, when the club failed to renew his contract due to financial constraints.
However, the Catalan president has admitted that their relationship has significantly improved over the past few months.
