“I Understood Football,” Mikel Arteta Reveals How Barcelona Opened His Eyes

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is making significant strides in the Premier League, and his team is regarded as one of the main favorites to win the title this season.

However, Arteta emphasizes that he does not attribute his footballing education and vision to Pep Guardiola or Manchester City, but rather to Barcelona — the club that, according to him, “opened his eyes” to life and football.

“Barcelona opened my eyes to the world and to humanity. I moved there alone, still a child. La Masia gave me the richest personal and human experience I have ever had in my life. I understood football on a completely different level,” Arteta said.

After his time at Barcelona, Arteta went on to build his playing career at well-known clubs such as PSG, Everton, and Arsenal, before retiring from professional football and beginning his journey as a coach.

It is worth recalling that Arteta has often been mentioned as a candidate to manage Barcelona, especially after Xavi Hernández was dismissed, but he chose to remain loyal to the project with Arsenal
