Mikel Arteta described the moment when Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history as a “magical moment,” after Arsenal scored late to defeat Everton 2–0 on Saturday.
The “Gunners” moved closer to their first league title in 22 years, as Dowman also provided the cross for Viktor Gyökeres, who finally broke the deadlock in the 89th minute.
Later, Dowman ran from deep in his own half to score into an empty net after Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had come forward for a corner kick during stoppage time.
With this goal, he set a new record as the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history, at the age of 16 years and 73 days.
Dowman has already set several records this season, becoming the youngest starter in Arsenal’s history and also the youngest player to play in the UEFA Champions League, both when he was still 15 years old.
“It was a big moment, especially with the way the goal was built. We had 10 or 15 seconds to enjoy what was happening,” said Arteta. “It was magical; the whole bench and the players jumped up together with the fans. It was a beautiful day.”
The victory gave Arsenal a 10-point lead over Manchester City, who have two games in hand, at the top of the table.
However, not for the first time this season, Arteta’s team lacked creativity until the moment Dowman came on from the bench 16 minutes before the end.
“He changed the game every time he touched the ball. He made things happen and we looked much more dangerous,” Arteta added.
“To do that at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win the match, is not something normal.”
