Conor McGregor is expected to return to the octagon in 2026 after completing his suspension and re-entering the anti-doping testing program, a necessary step before any official fight.
The former two-division champion remains one of the biggest names in UFC history, and his comeback is expected to turn into a major global event.
However, as of now, no opponent has been confirmed, although speculation is widespread.
As for potential opponents, several names are being discussed:
Michael Chandler – The most likely option. The two have built a storyline through The Ultimate Fighter, and the UFC has previously attempted to make this fight happen. It’s an easy fight to promote and guarantees excitement.
Justin Gaethje – A brutal matchup that promises nonstop action. However, for McGregor, after a long layoff, it would be a serious risk. Gaethje is also focused on his upcoming title fight against champion Ilia Topuria at a June event at the White House.
Nate Diaz – The highly anticipated trilogy. The rivalry is there and interest is guaranteed, but there are still sporting question marks. Most importantly, Diaz is currently a free agent, and not being under UFC contract would require a significant financial deal.
Max Holloway – An elite and very difficult challenge. Holloway’s pace and volume would be a major test for any version of McGregor, though it offers limited benefit for the Irishman, especially after Holloway lost the “BMF” belt.
Charles Oliveira – The former champion and current “BMF” title holder could benefit greatly from securing a fight with McGregor, a matchup the Brazilian had previously pursued during his lightweight title reign.
For now, the situation remains open. The UFC is expected to build a major event around McGregor’s return, but until an official announcement is made, everything remains at the level of speculation—and with McGregor, surprises are always part of the game.
What is certain, however, is that Conor McGregor has officially returned to the anti-doping testing program.
