Tom Lockyer experienced a heart attack during the match between Bournemouth and Luton on Saturday afternoon, a valid match for the Premier League.
The London team’s captain fortunately avoided the worst when he collapsed to the ground in the 59th minute, but the quick intervention of the medical staff saved him. For Lockyer, this was the second time heart issues arose, and now his career is more uncertain than ever.
The recent incident led Lockyer to seek advice from Christian Eriksen, the Manchester United midfielder who experienced a similar situation when he suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 against Finland. Eriksen invited the Luton captain to reflect, take time, and listen to the doctors regarding the future of his career.
“Firstly, I hope he’s okay; I saw and read about what happened to Lockyer. I hope he’s okay, takes the necessary time to recover, and enjoys the time with his family, who are there to support him in every way,” said Eriksen.
Lockyer suffered a heart attack on the field, and the Premier League decides the fate of the match.
“I advise him only to make the best decision for himself, to respect what the doctors will advise him. I know there are cases when nothing can stop you from playing and pursuing the dream, but it depends a lot on feelings and doctors. He needs to make a decision together with his family, but what’s important at this moment is to gain time and focus solely on recovery,” added Eriksen.
