Poem by Robert Bërns

I’m leaving, Eliza, into exile,
for the homeland no longer holds me.
And your fate, and my fate,
are divided by an ocean.

The separation is as heavy as a mountain,
a mountain without equal!
But hearts filled with longing don’t part,
when they are fused as one!

In my homeland, may you remain happy,
my treasure, my gem!
A voice reaches my ear from afar,
“You will not return, oh poor soul!”

The grip of your hand travels with me,
on my journey away,
the beat of my heart stays behind,
with you in my homeland!
