Manchester City are increasingly confident that Erling Haaland will sign a significantly improved new contract.
Negotiations are ongoing with the extraordinary 24-year-old Norwegian striker for an extended deal with a base salary close to €600,000 per week. This would make Haaland the highest-paid player in the Premier League, easily surpassing the €478,000 earned by his City teammate Kevin De Bruyne.
Furthermore, this contract would place Haaland among the highest individual earners in Europe. Currently, Barcelona’s Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who earns €718,000 per week, tops this elite list.
The former Borussia Dortmund player still has two and a half years left on the €450,000-per-week contract he signed when he joined City in July 2022. The new terms would keep him at the Etihad until the end of the 2028-2029 season.
One unresolved issue is the €180 million release clause in Haaland’s current contract. City are eager to remove this clause, but Haaland’s representatives insist it remains. A possible compromise is for both sides to agree to increase the release clause to €240 million, better reflecting his market value.
Haaland is regarded as the best striker in the world at present, continuing to break records under Pep Guardiola’s management. With 105 goals in 113 appearances for City – 75 of which have come in 77 Premier League matches – he has proven his exceptional form.
During recent negotiations in Norway with Haaland’s family and Brazilian agent Rafaela Pimenta, City executives received positive feedback on the new offer. In addition to the substantial pay increase, the contract also includes a two-year extension.
