MOSZNA CASTLE IN POLAND

The stunning Moszna Castle, located in southwestern Poland, is one of the most beautiful castles I’ve ever visited. Its mixed-style architecture, 99 turrets and huge park complex make it look like something coming straight out of a fairytale. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised to hear that Moszna Castle has often been featured in lists of the most beautiful castles in the world.

The castle, situated in the small village of Moszna, is one of the best-known monuments in Poland’s Upper Silesian region. It’s locally known as Moszna Zamek and dates back to the 17th century.

If you’re into castles, architecture or history, you will love this place! This little guide will help you plan your visit to this enchanting place.

Moszna Caslte: A little history

According to the local legend, the history of Moszna Castle doesn’t start in the 17th century but a few centuries earlier. It’s believed that there used to be a monastery that was run by the Knights Templar here.

This monastery would date back to before the 14th century, as their last leader was burned at the stake in 1314 and the Templars were hunted down. Although this was never proven, very old cellars have been found in the castle’s garden during excavation work. This definitely adds a little bit of mystery to the legend!

During the 17th century, Moszna Castle was built in baroque style architecture, but some additions have been made throughout the centuries. The Neo-Gothic eastern wing was added around 1900 and 12 years later, the neo-renaissance western wing was also built. This combination of styles gives the castle a very unique look.

Moszna Castle was the residence of the Silesian Tiele-Winckler family from 1866 until 1944. The family had to flee the castle when the Red Army decided to occupy it. During the short period of the occupation, the castle got damaged and many internal fittings were destroyed.

After WWII, Moszna Castle didn’t have a permanent owner anymore and it belonged to numerous institutions. It became a nursing home in 1972 and a psychiatric hospital later.

However, the hospital moved to another building later and the castle has been open to tourists ever since.
