The poem entitled ‘Symbol and Reality’ is an evocative piece which delves into not only a particular aspect of human tendency but also evolves intelligence, egoism, humanity, and the consequences of our actions. The imagery used throughout the poem develops a sense of mystery and premonition, sketching the reader into a world of symbolism and metaphor.
The juxtaposition of intelligence as a miracle and egoism as a negative force is captivating, suggesting a conflict between elevated perfections and ground cravings. The mention of defending or attacking humanity hints at the moral choices we face as individuals in a particular society, while the idea of chests full of artificial treasures echoes the vacuum of material wealth.
The imagery of being trapped floating in an esoteric and ignorant universe conveys a sense of both surprise and detention, highlighting the conflict between liberation and constraint. The reference to the delusions of taking over the sky itself indicates a hubristic ambition that is ultimately doomed to fail.
The observation of Vesuvius opening again and a world power growing larger carries apocalyptic undertones, hinting at a cataclysmic event brought about by human stupidity and avarice. The final lines, which speak of being enclosed in emblems of truth, suggest a reckoning or a revelation that will expose the falsehoods and fantasies of the past.
This verse is a thought-provoking reflection on the complexities of human nature and the significance of our actions. It brings humans to contemplate the choices we make and the inheritance we leave behind, warning of the threats of anarchistic egoism and the essence of seeking truth and insight in a world filled with illusions. Eventually, the poet pleads for humanity and beyond truth everything is engraved to those who only wander for capital in life.
